In a recent newsletter, I promised to unpack how owned media, the PESO model, and word-of-mouth referrals fit together in today’s AI-driven landscape. Here’s the short answer: referrals are still the fastest, most trusted way to land the right clients. Owned media is how you accelerate them.
Let’s start with reality:
- Referrals win every time. Nothing beats being introduced by a trusted COI or client. That’s your “safe driver” handing you the keys to their most valued relationships.
- Technology is undefeated. Search, social, and now AI are changing how credibility is measured. If you’re invisible online, even your best referral sources will hesitate.
So the question isn’t which matters more—referrals or media. The question is: how do we combine them so you fill your referral pipeline predictably and get meetings faster?
Step 1: Publish Like a Pro (Not a Brochure)
Marcus Sheridan put it simply (and brilliantly):
“Content—assuming it is honest and transparent—is the greatest sales tool in the world today. ”
That’s exactly what we need to be doing, stop selling catalogs and start doing what Marcus did: become the most trusted voice by owning your customers’ questions.
Another of his gems that really lands:
“The ideal ratio, from the customer’s point of view, is 5 to 1 or better. In other words, you should refer to the customer five times more than you refer to you and your company. ”
Keep it client-first. Ask: What questions are they typing into AI? Then answer them clearly and thoroughly—with blogs, videos, guides—that AI can “see”, and your referral partners can share.
Step 2: Earn Credibility, Don’t Rent It
We’re not just building a website; we’re staking a claim in AI’s answer ecosystem.
Patrick Moorhead, author of Answer Rank and a key voice on the Endless Customers podcast, sums it up:
“Being the trusted voice in your space isn’t about dominance. It’s about dependability. It’s about showing up with answers, week after week, in a way that’s clear, confident, and honest. ”
Basically, it’s not enough to pop up once; you’ve gotta show up and stay. AI, your referral partners, and clients all notice consistency and clarity.
Step 3: Claim Your Digital Real Estate Now
AI is going to monetize answers like Google monetizes search. The firms that stake their ground early, answering real client questions with depth and clear authority, will own that digital real estate. Wait, and you’ll be paying rent forever.
