As the person finishes their thoughts, kindly tell them that their experience reminds you of a previous one they might enjoy. Upon receiving the signal to go ahead, share the incident and the lesson you learned. The better types of stories bring about a smile and laughter, too. The underlying benefits include sharing laughter, realizing some commonality, and encouraging the conversation to move forward to find a suitable way for working together. 

Although we typically view people in management as the ‘serious type,’ they are human and enjoy a good, appropriate laugh. Should the two-minute (or less) story apply to what they just shared, appreciation will typically be yours.

Stand Out but Don’t Stand Alone

It’s critical to stand out in our unique style to accomplish our goals. However, those who criticize others who work differently never fare well and might need to say farewell before they intend. The better approach is to be accepting of those with varying talents and ambitions and potentially find a way to support one another and possibly work together.

One example is building our network on social media platforms. By sharing our best online, it becomes easier to attract a similar-minded audience, but with varying expertise. And upon noting loyalty from another, it is wise to also check their work. Although our future is challenging to predict with 100% accuracy, we must hold on to our principles and ideals to achieve future success.
